Spellro is a Chrome extension built by MarketingSip. This page explains, in plain terms, exactly what data Spellro touches, where it goes, and what it never does. It covers both the Spellro extension and this website (spellro's marketing pages).
1. What Spellro stores, and where
Spellro uses Chrome's built-in local storage (chrome.storage.local), which lives only on your own device inside your browser profile. Nothing here is transmitted to MarketingSip or to any server we operate. Specifically, Spellro stores:
- Your Groq API key — so Spellro can authenticate your correction requests with Groq on your behalf.
- Your saved shortcuts — the trigger text and expansion text pairs you create.
- Your settings — which features are turned on, any custom correction instructions you've added, and any sites you've excluded.
- Usage counters used only for the in-browser "time saved" panel — a running total of estimated seconds saved and a count of actions taken, used solely to display a friendly stat back to you.
If you use Chrome sync, some of this may sync across your own signed-in devices through Google's own sync infrastructure — that transfer is governed by Google's privacy policy, not ours, since Spellro never sees it.
2. What happens when you fix text with Spellro
When you click the Spellro icon on a text field, the text in that field is sent directly from your browser to Groq's API (api.groq.com) along with a fixed instruction to correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and capitalization. This request is authenticated with your own Groq API key. Spellro's developers never receive, log, or store this text — it does not pass through any server we control. Groq's handling of the request is governed by Groq's own privacy policy and terms, which we encourage you to review at groq.com.
If you add optional notes (e.g. "keep a formal tone"), those notes are sent along with the text in the same request, and are not stored by us afterward.
3. What happens when a shortcut expands
Shortcut expansion happens entirely inside your browser. No network request is made, no text is sent anywhere — Spellro simply reads the saved expansion from local storage and inserts it into the field you're typing in.
4. Excel import and export
Exporting your shortcuts creates a file on your own device using your browser's file download — it never touches a server. Importing reads a file you select from your own device, directly in your browser. Neither action sends your shortcuts anywhere outside your machine.
5. The sponsor panel
After a correction or shortcut expansion, Spellro briefly shows a small panel confirming the action and, underneath it, an optional "Sponsored" section that may link to MarketingSip.com or another sponsor. This section is static content with an outbound link — it does not track you, does not load third-party tracking scripts, and can be turned off entirely from Spellro's settings.
6. What Spellro does not do
- We do not operate a server that receives your typed text.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your data, because we don't collect it in the first place.
- We do not use analytics or tracking scripts inside the extension.
- We do not require an account, email address, or sign-in to use Spellro.
7. Permissions the extension requests
Spellro requests broad host access (to run on any website) because its core purpose — the fix icon and shortcut expander — needs to work on any page you type on. It requests storage access to save your key, shortcuts, and settings locally. It does not request access to your browsing history, cookies, downloads, or any data beyond the text fields you interact with directly.
8. This website
This marketing site (the pages you're reading now) is a static site with no accounts, forms, or analytics trackers. It loads fonts from Google Fonts, which may receive your IP address as a normal part of serving font files, governed by Google's own privacy policy.
9. Your choices
You can clear all of Spellro's stored data at any time by removing the extension from Chrome, or by clearing individual settings from Spellro's options page. You can turn off the grammar icon, the shortcut expander, or the sponsor panel independently, at any time.
10. Children's privacy
Spellro is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from children, consistent with the fact that we don't operate a data-collecting server at all.
11. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of Spellro after a change means you accept the updated policy.
